Lesson 3 – How To Hold Your Guitar
How Do You Hold A Guitar
I’d say one of the biggest mistakes beginner guitar players make is how they hold their guitar when they first learn. I’ve seen many videos that try to explain this. But, I just feel that only a hands on guitar instructor can get you started in the right direction. If you’re just taking online guitar lessons? Well, I just hope you really view these videos and take to heart the way Nick is explaining how to hold the guitar.
It’s very important how you hold your guitar to not start bad habits. Later as you continue your journey of learning the guitar it will be very important that you have the correct posture to be able to play more difficult pieces. Nate Savage explains it quite well.
How To Hold An Electric Guitar
The Electric guitar is quite different from the acoustic guitar. Depending on whether you have an electric acoustic, hollow body electric or solid body electric. The solid body electric is the most common and can be quite heavier than the acoustic guitar.
In this lesson Nate explains how to hold an electric guitar. Although quite similar in holding the acoustic guitar, there are some differences. Also, he will explain how to hold your guitar while standing up. The positioning is important.

i`v only been no this website and i luv it.
Hi Aditya,
Gosh, ya know…. You’re right! There really isn’t much out there for the lefty. I also have never taught a lefty. I do know this.. If you’re left handed you should play left handed. I’ve seen a lot of advice out there telling lefties to learn right handed. I believe it will just make things more difficult.
There really is no difference to learning left or right though. You just have to take into account that the images are “mirrored” so to speak. Also, that the guitar is stringed the same and not just a right hand guitar turned upside down.
You’re at a slight disadvantage. But, I’ll keep my eyes and ears open and email you if I find some good left hand guitar instructors online. k?
Hey there John, I am a left-handed player and I rarely find any tips for holding a guitar and how to form chords for the lefties. Hoping to find some here?

Hi Chloe,
If you’re an absolute beginner and want to learn as quick as possible? I’d have to admit that taking a couple Private Guitar Lessons in your area would be the place to start. I’m not sure how much private lessons are in the UK? But, they run about $20 to $40 per lesson in the States. Only a physical lesson will set you in the right direction and get you on the fast track by setting you up with good habits. After that, I’d take Online Guitar Lessons. They’re much cheaper and you’ll already have the basics down to understand how it all works together. Hope this helps?

Hi i would have preferd it in writing but helpfull informaition i am only young and desprete to paly my friend has lessons at school and i want to be as good as her
Sure Dami. Although it may be hard for me to write a good explanation.
Try and remember this. If you’re right handed? Place the guitar on your right thigh as close to your body as possible with the guitar straight up and down and your right shoulder slightly over the body of the guitar. I know this may seem difficult. But, more importantly is to be able to finger the chords. If you try looking down on top of the fretboard by having the guitar angled, it will be very difficult to finger the chords. You don’t want to have to place your wrist that far under the neck. You can also see a pretty good explanation on the page Choosing A Right Guitar & the 4th scene on Parts of The Guitar. Does this make sense?
