Lesson 11- How To Play Barre Chords
Barre chords I would say are the right of passage for all guitar players starting out. when you finally learn to play barre chords you’ve set yourself up to basically learn any style of guitar you want.
Baree chords are very difficult for beginners. It’s finding and developing that stregth in your first finger to be able to apply enough pressure as to not mute the strings. Plus, you also have to apply enoug pressure to play the chords. If you really want to develop the stregth in your hands? Learn barre chords.
Let’s take a look at the two main types of barre chords. The 6th string root and 5th string root.
6th String Root Barre Chord
The sixth string or low E string is used as the root of the 6th string root barre chord. Use the diagram below to play the following barre chords. Your first finger (index finger) will be used as the root or chord name.

5th String Root Barre Chord
The fifth string or A string is used as the root of the 5th string root barre chord. Use the below diagram to play the 5th string root barre chords. Your first finger (index finger) will be used as the root or chord name.

Hi Muyiwa,
I purposely left out the sharps and flats to not confuse beginners. Using the chart above, the sharps and flats would be where there is no note indicated. So, let’s say you’re on the sixth string and on the G note on the 3rd fret…. If you went up a half step that would be G# (sharp). Now, let’s say you’re on the 6th string and on the A note. If you went down a half a step that would be Ab (flat). Can you see that these are the same? Ab & G#? See how that can be confusing? This all has to do with what key you’re in depending on whether it’s flat or sharp. Here you can find more on understanding the notes on the guitar.
