Memorizing The Notes On The Fretboard

You will need to memorize the notes on the keyboard.  This will help you throughout your guitar playing and it is essential.  Notice that on every string there is a whole step between the notes except for B & C and E & F.  This will make it easier for you to remember if you memorize it this way. We also left out all the sharp (#) & flat (b) notes as not to confuse you. The blank spaces on the fretboard below would either be a # or a b. Example: On the 4th Fret 6th String, this would either be a G# or an Ab depending on the key you’re playing in. This works throughout all the blank notes on the fretboard below.

If you’re not going the memorize all the notes on every guitar string? Well, you need to at least memorize the notes on the 5th and 6th string. It’s basically the starting point to knowing the key your playing in and the names of the barre chords you’re playing. We’ll get into barre chords in the next lesson.
