Coldplay | Clocks
This is a highly recommended song for beginners to play a song straight away that people will recognize. The song has 3 basic chords for the verse and another 3 basic chords for the bridge that are played throughout the song and a very simple all down stroke rhythm.
Here Jen from Mahalo.com shows you how to play the song very simply. Of course you will have to have a capo if you’re going to play along with song. But, I’m sure you already have one!
If not? You’re going to have to get one.
Many beginners believe that using a capo is cheating. Well, I’m here to tell you that most if not all musicians who play guitar use them. It’s just a very simple way to change keys and use guitar chords you’re more accustomed to.
Well, take it slow and have fun with this one. Feel free to leave comments if you need any help ![]()

You’re very welcome Cody!
Awesome, thank you! I always appreciate haste in responses on this website. Once again, John, you help me become a better player. Thanks a ton.
Hi Cody,
Yes. Very good explanation by the way
She’s playing the open chords sort of like playing power chords and only playing the first two bass notes of the chord before accenting with the whole chord. So, for the open D chord, she’s playing the D & G string (4th & 3rd string) and the same for the Am chord. On the Em she’s playing the A & D string (5th & 4th string). The thing that makes it great for beginners is:
1. The chords are easy
2. The rhythm has all down strokes.

I have a question about this song, It’s a great song, and I’m interested in learning it considering there’s a way to get around the Fmaj7 barre chord. Although, she says something about the coldplay rhythm by accenting certain parts in the strumming, THAT I can grasp – BUT – It doesn’t sound like she’s playing the entire chord prior to the accent, is she only hitting the base note for the chord and then on the accent playing the entire one? Hopefully that makes sense, not entirely sure how to word it in a different way.
